8th July Closing Bell

Closing Bell 8th July 2026 Today's sell-off was primarily driven by global geopolitical concerns, with domestic factors amplifying the decline. The benchmark indices ended sharply lower: Sensex: -1, 677 points (76, 503) Nifty 50: -517 points (23, 882) Nearly ₹8 lakh crore of investor wealth was wiped out in a single session. 🔻 Nifty Bank: Down nearly 3%, led by heavy selling in private banks. 🔻 Financial Services: Biggest drag on the index. 🔻 IT: Weak due to risk-off sentiment. 🔻 Auto: Declined on concerns over rising crude oil prices. 🔻 Oil & Gas: Mixed performance, with upstream companies like ONGC outperforming as higher crude prices boost realizations. Escalation in US-Iran Conflict (Biggest Trigger) The biggest reason behind today's fall was renewed military escalation between the United States and Iran after the collapse of the recent truce. Investors rushed towards safe-haven assets. Global equity markets turned risk-off. Asian and European markets traded weak. Sharp Surge in Crude Oil Prices Brent crude jumped over 6%, approaching $79/barrel. This is negative for India because: India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil. Higher oil prices increase inflation. Corporate margins come under pressure. Current account deficit may widen. RBI could face difficulty in cutting interest rates. Foreign Investor Selling (FII Pressure) Foreign institutional investors preferred reducing exposure to emerging markets amid heightened global uncertainty. The selling was concentrated in: Banking Financial Services IT Large-cap stocks Weak Global Market Sentiment Markets across Asia remained under pressure because investors feared: Prolonged geopolitical conflict Higher energy costs Rising inflation globally Slower economic growth 🟢 Nifty Top Gainers ONGC +1% Eternal Positive Wipro Positive 🔴 Top Losers Stock Performance Jio Financial Services -5% InterGlobe Aviation -5% Shriram Finance Among top losers Maruti Suzuki India -4% Bajaj Finance
